La Smorfia
The origin of the term “Smorfia” is uncertain, but the most frequent explanation is that it is linked to the name of Morpheus, the God of dreams in ancient Greece.
La Smorfia is a type of Southern Italian Gematria. It maps dream motifs onto numbers 1 through 90, revealing which numbers should be played in the lottery. Dictionaries mapping thousands of items and ideas onto these numbers are popular in Southern Italy, particularly Naples. You can read one online for free: Nuova Smorfia del giuoco del lotto (1866) – Giustino Rumeo
The ninety numbers of “La Smorfia” derive from those of the lottery. The lottery game was born in Genoa in the 16th century and was legalized only two century later in various states of Italy. So here’s where the “Smorfia” come from. From trying to derive numbers to play for the game.
FonZmorfia
Although a gematria is the relationship between natural numbers into a word written in a certain language with a certain font, in the case of the Neapolitan Smorfia in the past each number was accompanied by an Image to help illiterates understand the meaning of the number through an unwritten communication.
Since we are not illiterate we will use words.
This section’s mission is to leverage “La Smorfia”‘s structure to create connections between natural numbers (those made by God), Neapolitan, Italian and English.
You can use this table to get numbers from your dreams and play the lottery =).
